I just talked to a friend’s uncle at her birthday party. He has had some difficult times and was telling me about how he’s been doing better lately, and it was so nice to hear about someone’s efforts paying off. I’ll maybe see him one more time and I hope he continues doing better.
I was at a (really cool) playground in Santa Barbara with my son when and a younger gal came up to me and asked if I knew Billie Eilish. I said yeah, kinda, which must have let her know that I was not, in fact Billie’s brother Finneas—who she thought I looked like and would have died if she left without asking. It was so sweet and we talked about our shared love (in different degrees) of Billie for a few minutes before she ran off to wrangle the kids she was watching. She may have been let down but she made my day!
I met someone for the first time who I’ve known of through my social circle for most of my life. They have a reeeeally interesting job and I just stood in the corner of this party asking them questions about their work. They asked for my number so we can go to lunch which I gave and they texted me so I would have theirs and now I am too embarrassed to follow up. (They haven’t either.) I am being really weird about having a friend in their industry because I have many judgments about their profession even though I know it’s needed. (And no, it’s not sex work!) And I just think it would be awkward. But anyway I had a great time talking to them at the party.
A couple of months ago, I was coming back home from a trip. I was exhausted. I had attended a funeral 2 days prior to that, I had slept horribly, I had already been on a flight, and now my bus was very, very late. I wanted to cry of exhaustion. But then I went to show my ticket to the guy at the gate at the bus station (a man in his 50s) and I greeted him with a smile, because that's the polite thing to do. He checked my ticket, then said, "You have a gorgeous smile, young lady!" That simple compliment made my day 10 times better. I still think of that guy whenever I smile to myself at the mirror. It really is the little things =)
Hopping in a few days late to say there was a hilarious episode of the new show, Adults, about this need to deeply connect with everyone you meet, and how it eventually backfires for one of the characters. It was a good escalation to show you can be a good person, leave a good impact on someone, and just leave it at that.
I met someone at an art show who said “you have good energy!” It was such a loving comment, something I didn’t know I needed to hear 🥰
